All this is very interesting. I didn't see it that way. But I do see the commercialism. And we can discuss U2. There is alot of gospel and celtic tribalism in their music. Yes, a lot of cliche poetry for sure...very convenient. There are some punk elements...and telegraph guitar playing... I like their aspects of gospel, mick jones telepgraph punk guitar, celtic tribalism in their music...and then there's a lot of cliche crap... I just simply see star power trying to have some affect and effect on the sickness. Vanity, maybe there's some...but I also see alot of generosity in their actions. It's a very interesting subject. This isn't a patronizing question or are (s)? What would you do with such success as a musician? What do you do to try and make change in the world when you acquire that influence? I wonder this to myself this question, multitude... It's difficult.

I get disgusted every day hearing the clash, ac/dc, david bowie, the who, Jimi...so many bands....who were so ANTI...in Chevrolet or Nissan or Samsung, etc, etc, etc...commercials right now. JOE STRUMMER and JIMI HENDRIX are pissed off in their graves!

...what would I do achieving a big Influence because of huge success , to make the world a better place...? WELL 1ST OF ALl !

Not taking place at Politicians banquet tables. Not beeing photographed, shaking hands with all that Politician and Buissiness scum...I would try and support indipendent movements etc etc.

The Stones did it way back (and I think they`re still doing such things ) ...and Jagger once mentioned : (1972) " When one of the stones is busted by Drug abuse,it`s in any Newspaper all around the world. When we spend 350000$ for the Victims of the Nicaraguan Earthquake..it`s foodnote in the press."

By the 80s it changed dramatically, cos News Agents and PR Agents discovered a big big publicity marked and types like Bono or Sting took to it like a duck to water...

Everybody rich or not can do a few things WITHOUT tooting the own horn whenever there`s the smallest chance to get the name in the press...that`s what I hate of Bono and such guys...

I tend to think that the guys of EODM would`ve come to play this place again by their own inspiration...and that`s why I called them idiots...WHY? and the question is still there,is Bono inviting them to play the place? What the hell is his personal involvement with the whole tragidy ???

NOTHING! It`s Publicity! Disgusting.
Let me cite another Brilliant Spirit about these kinda actions... Mr. John Lydon in Persona:

" see, they`re all proud about what they achieved...shaking hands and taking pics with the Downing Street No 10 criminals or beeing invented to have Tea with the royals...the Jaggers, the Eltons the Bono`s...let me tell you what...the aristocracy always liked the company of Jesters "

Mr. Punch. I loved your Johnny Rotten Quote. That surely does put things into perspective. Yeah man...I don't know, I suppose if I was a wealthy success I would be trying to do things under the radar, but I would weigh my options if I need to be in the radar...

I guess I see that perception from Sean Penn. I suppose he has used his star power minimally, then worked his ass off down in Haiti and still does...then again, I know since we never hear about him that
a lot of attention towards the Haitian's falls by the wayside unless they have another disaster, or political uprising.

Yeah man...I see your point. Then again, I just recently watched a Vice News Special Report on the Aid's epidemic. And frankly without Bono playing jester or what have you with that serious war hawk bush
that most of those millions and millions and millions of dollars from the US would not have been deployed to provide not only education, but pretty much stop a lot of the mother to baby transmission of HIV.

Were they also happy to show the world "look at what we are doing". Yeah, probably!!! You are right in these respects...

I'm totally with you and totally see your point. I just don't know if that paradigm of HIV in Africa would be changing with it wasn't for the "hey look at me I'm a do gooder and pat me on the back celebrities".

I've read some small reports from citizens that have come across on Bono or the band where they were gracious when they spent a lot of time in Vancouver BC. While I'm certainly not defending U2 or Bono,
if it wasn't for these citizens drawing attention to that "giving" to local press outlets, it would have been unnoticed. And it wouldn't have been publicized at all by the band or corporate media.

Let's take the example of Marlon Brando. I'm mean that guy was fucking amazing! He used his star power to be one of the 1st guys to try and change the civil rights movement in black America and that was NOT popular.
He had death threats...he stood with the black panthers, he stood with MLK, and this was far before anyone else was. And then he risked his life for Native Americans in this country when again, it was NOT popular at all.
He had the national guard shooting at him. He didn't want to be in the press. But he thought, fuck it, if I am gonna be an icon, then I might as well use it for good. I ain't saying that Bono does this and I'm certainly not comparing Marlon Brando to Bono. My point is if you have influence it can be used for good things. So, if you are in the radar, don't go under it. I've so much admiration for a guy like Marlon Brando in this respect. Check out the documentary that was out recently , it's called, Listen to Me Marlon. It touches vaguely on this subject. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4145178/
